The fastest way to a useful first conversation is a plain email. Tell me what you're working on, what you've tried, where you're stuck, and roughly when you'd want to start. If you don't know the answers to all of that, send it anyway; working them out is part of the first call.
I'll usually reply within a working day. The first conversation is a conversation, not a pitch. If we're not the right fit I'll say so, and I usually know someone who is.
